Expectations were high in Tucson as the Arizona Wildcats entered the 1987-88 season ranked #17 in the AP Poll. Lute Olson's squad was led by junior forward Sean Elliott and senior guard Steve Kerr. The Wildcats were deep too. Tom Tolbert, Anthony Cook and Jud Buechler would all go on to play in the NBA. Arizona finished the regular season 31-2 boasting both the regular season Pac 10 championship and the Pac 10 Conference Tournament crown.

The University of Arizona's basketball program came to national prominence during the Lute Olson era. From 1983 to 2008, Olson led the Wildcats to 4 Final Four appearances including 2 trips to the National Championship Game. In 1997 his team defeated Kentucky in overtime to secure the school's first National Championship. In his time at Arizona Olson won 11 Pac-10 regular season championships and 4 Pac- 10 tournament championships. He also coached his fair share of college basketball legends.
